Design guidelines
We recommend using our templates and guides for preparing your print-ready PDF.

You can download our guides and templates in the template section. Remember to delete the template layers before exporting your design to PDF.

If you already have a design, no worries; we accept other file formats, including JPEG, PNG, or EPS.

For photographic content, high-resolution JPEGs are recommended, preferably without compression. For graphics or text-based content, we recommend print-ready, vector-based PDFs. For content that is a combination of graphics and photography, we suggest using print-ready PDFs to ensure the best quality.

Use CMYK as the color mode.

Prepare your files using CMYK as the color mode, not RGB. Use color mode FOGRA39 (ISO Coated v2). If you are unsure of the color mode of your file, don't worry we can always convert this for you. Keep in mind this can cause the colours to differ from the original file.

Resolution of at least 300 dpi.

Make sure the resolution of the images and graphics in your artwork are at least 300 dpi.

Add 0.125(in) bleed and keep 0.125(in) safety margin

During production, there might be a slight cut deviation. To avoid any issues, we recommend the following:

  • Add a 0.125 inch bleed around all edges of your design.
  • Keep important elements 0.125 inches away from the edge or folding lines.
  • Avoid using borders or frames on smaller formats like labels or business cards.
Text and fonts specifications (Min. font size is 6 pt)

For this product, the minimum font size is 6 pt. To avoid any issues, we recommend the following:

  • Fonts must be embedded or outlined.
  • If your design contains small black text, make sure it is 100 % black (Cyan: 0 Magenta: 0 Yellow: 0 Black: 100).

Note that we don't check spelling or typographical errors.

Check line thickness.

Lines should be at least 0.25 pt. Negative lines should be at least 0.5 pt.

Check your artwork for overprint.

Make sure no elements in your artwork are set on overprint unless you want this effect in your design.

Make sure the ink coverage isn't higher than 300%.

Force Color Images to CMYK with a 260% ink limit (in Photoshop > Convert Color Profile > Photoshop 5 Default CMYK). Make sure the ink coverage isn't higher than 300%.

Frequently Asked Questions: Magazine printing

What paper type can I choose from?

70lb Uncoated Text: A lightweight, smooth, and non-reflective paper that’s perfect for text-heavy designs. Ideal for stationery, newsletters, and workbooks.
80lb Gloss Book: A thin, glossy paper commonly used for magazines and catalogs. Ideal for high-volume distribution.
80lb Gloss Cover: Slightly thicker than Gloss Book paper, offering a sturdy feel with a glossy finish, great for brochures and small booklets.
100lb Gloss Book: A premium glossy paper with a heavier weight, perfect for vibrant visuals in magazines and high-quality catalogs.

What is lamination and do I need it on my cover?

Lamination is a plastic coating that's applied to a finished printed page. Laminating a cover not only elevates the look and feel of your print, but also extends the longevity. Additionally, it acts as an added layer of protection and helps reduce the risk of creasing, fading, wrinkling, abrasion and tearing. It is important to keep in mind that ordering without lamination could mean the prints may be more at risk of ink or paper damage. When books with lamination are packaged on top of each other in boxes, there is no risk of the ink smudging on the other books.
Note: Laminated paper products are water-resistant, not waterproof.

Can I select any paper type or weight for lamination?

no, not all paper can be laminated.

Is the amount of pages equal to the amount of paper sheets?

No. This is because the pages are folded and printed on both sides. A sheet of paper gets folded in the middle so it covers 4 pages (2 on the front and 2 on the back). For example, when you choose an 5.5 x 8.5 in brochure with 8 pages, we print two 8.5 x 11 sheets (two times as big) and fold them in half, which results in a total of 8 pages.

What are the uses of custom magazines?

From printed zines to glossy corporate publications, we offer a variety of options to suit any project, such as:
- Corporate Magazines: Perfect for businesses looking to create a professional, branded publication that reflects their expertise and values.
- Creative Zines: Publish your own printed zine or artistic magazine with unique designs and a custom layout that suits your creative vision.
- Event Magazines: Whether it’s for a conference, trade show, or festival, our magazine printing services will help you produce a high-quality publication to engage your audience.

How much does it cost to print a magazine?

The cost of printing a magazine can vary significantly depending on factors like quantity, page count, paper weight, and size. Whether you're printing a small printed zine or a large-scale custom magazine, understanding these key elements will help you get an accurate estimate. Larger runs can cost as low as under 1 USD per copy. HelloPrint offers the most competitive prices on the market.

What is the size of a standard magazine?

The standard size for a magazine is typically 8.5 x 11 inches. This size is commonly used for general publications, including lifestyle, fashion, and business magazines. However, some magazines may use different sizes, such as Digest size (5.5 x 8.5 inches), used for smaller, more compact magazines like some niche or specialized publications.
The size choice often depends on the type of content and the target audience.

What is the fastest possible turnaround?

The fastest possible turnaround varies depending on the specifications you select, and will always be stated at the bottom of the page.
