Making sustainability an integral part of our company’s DNA

Being the fifth largest in the world, the printing industry is far from being the sustainable and environmentally conscious industry that we aspire for it to be. At Helloprint, we know that all too well - and we talk about it. That doesn’t mean, however, that we cannot add our own contribution towards making it better.

On the contrary, we feel it is our duty to create all the positive impact that we can and use our platform as a force for change towards a more sustainable industry. Embracing sustainability today - and for the future - is all about the long-term existence of both our company and the world. 

Our vision is to become not only the largest, but also the most sustainable marketplace for customized print products out there. It is ambitious, just like all the other goals we set ourselves. We are always up for a good challenge, especially when it’s for a good cause.

Our mission, in turn, is to be a net positive organization. A company that gives back more than it takes. 

Creating a positive societal and environmental impact and becoming a sustainability leader in our industry is not something that will happen overnight. It takes time and effort, and most of all, it takes a clear understanding of how we can change our industry for the better. 

At Helloprint, we start with ourselves. What that means is that our number-one priority is to make sustainability a part of our company’s DNA. After all, if we don’t integrate sustainability into everything we do as individuals and a team, we would not be able to achieve our goal of becoming the most sustainable platform for print products out there.

But how do we make sure sustainability does become a part of our DNA?

For us, one of the keys to it has been to have a dedicated team driving our efforts forward. 

Isabelle de Wolf, Sustainable Business Officer at Helloprint, and Megi Kass, Sustainability Specialist, have been our champions of sustainability, and they make sure that everything we do is in line with our ambitions of making a positive environmental and societal impact. 

For me, a strong commitment to sustainability leads to innovation and out-of-the-box thinking, Isabelle says. It leads to finding alternative ways of doing business and breaking the status quo. Sustainability is also about collaboration as well as changing people’s minds, habits and behaviors, one step at a time.

Similarly, Megi too shares a strong passion for sustainability and creating societal impact. Bringing her scientific background together with that passion is what makes her just the person to translate environmental science into our business context.

My background allows me to look deeper into the scientific underlying of our materials and products to get a better understanding of the bigger picture, she says. 

And still, we know that having a sustainability team in place is not enough to make an entire organization embrace an impact-making attitude. Sustainability needs to become ingrained in everyone’s mindset in order for it to live across teams and the wider organization. 

So we’ve gone a level deeper and established the Helloprint Sustainability Committee, too. The committee can be seen as a fluid, interdepartmental layer of our company - or in other words a team of dedicated

ambassadors. They are the face of sustainability within our company and spread our goals and values to their own teams and beyond. They are the ones that create that snowball effect and make sure our mission and vision remain on top of everyone’s mind. glue that keeps our sustainability mission alive at all times. 

By integrating sustainability on multiple levels and in various parts of our organization, we aim to inspire individuals as well as teams to bring their A-game when it comes to driving initiatives with an environmental and societal impact. In doing so, our Talent and Culture team, for example, does not shy away from the challenge of organizing volunteer events, both internally and externally. Our Category Management team, in turn, understands the importance of expanding our eco-friendly product range and does so too. And that’s just a glimpse of it. 

From driving sustainability within our organization to bringing it out into the world to our stakeholders and customers, we make sure that we get a little bit closer to our goals every day. Integrating sustainability into our company’s DNA is a process rather than a one-time effort, and that is the beauty of it. 

It is about making us all better as a team, company, and as a society, day in and day out.
